Can you use nail oil over gel, SNS, acrylic, BIAB or dip? Yes, here is how

Body Collective nail serum pen

Yes, you can use cuticle oil on gel nails, and over acrylic, SNS, BIAB and dip. Oil on the cuticle and the skin around a set does not loosen it, because lifting usually comes from the natural nail flexing or from water getting in at the edge. Daily oil also stops the cuticle drying and shrinking back, which is what makes a set look grown out.

  • Oil on the cuticle and the skin around a set does not loosen it.
  • Oil the cuticle line, the skin at the sides and under the free edge. Wait a day after a fresh set.
  • One click of the pen a day covers ten nails.
  • The nail you get back on removal day is the one that grew while the set was on.

Does oil make gel, SNS or acrylic nails lift?

No: oil on the cuticle and the skin beside a set does not make it lift, because lifting usually starts at the edge where the product meets your own nail, from that nail flexing, from water getting in, or from a knock.

The oil sits on the skin around the set, not under the product, so there's nothing for it to loosen. The one place it doesn't belong is the nail itself before a new set goes on. Your tech cleans the nail first anyway, but there's no reason to make that job harder, so skip oil on the nail plate on appointment morning.

Where do you put cuticle oil on gel or acrylic nails?

Apply oil to the cuticle line, the skin along both sidewalls and the underside of the free edge, and leave the surface of the set alone.

Here's the routine, and it only takes about 20 seconds:

  1. Click the pen once. A new pen can take 20 to 40 clicks to fill the first time, so don't panic if nothing happens straight away. After that, one click a day covers ten nails.
  2. Brush along the cuticle line. This is the strip of new growth and skin at the base, where a set shows it has grown out.
  3. Brush along both sidewalls. The skin down each side dries and catches first.
  4. Run the brush under the free edge. Your own nail is exposed there, and it dries out like any other.
  5. Massage it in with your thumb, then wipe any oil off the surface of the set. Once a day is plenty.

I used my serum on my own clients for years before I offered it to anyone else, and the Nail Growth and Strength Serum pen works on natural nails and over gel, SNS, acrylic and dip. If you'd like the pen technique step by step, it's in how to use a cuticle oil pen.

When can you start oiling a fresh set?

Wait a day after a fresh set before you oil, which gives the new set a quiet day to settle.

That's also the day your tech's aftercare advice matters most, so if it differs from anything here, follow your tech.

Appointment day
No oil on the nail itself beforehand, and no oil afterwards until the next day.
The day after
Start oiling the cuticle, sidewalls and underside, once a day.
Within days
Most people notice softer cuticles. Results vary.

Does the same go for SNS and dip?

Yes: SNS and dip get the same care as gel, so oil the cuticle and the skin around the set, wait a day after a fresh set, and keep oil off the nail itself on appointment day.

If your tech has given you different instructions for your system, follow those.

What about BIAB?

BIAB is usually applied as a thin overlay on your own nail, so the same rules hold: oil the cuticle and the skin around it, not the surface of the set.

Your tech knows the details of their own product best, so check with them if you're unsure.

What does oil do for the natural nail under a set?

Oil keeps the new growth at the base of your nail flexible and the skin around the set soft, so the nail that comes out from under the enhancement is in better shape.

The nail you get back on removal day is the nail that grew while the set was on, which is why those daily clicks count.

Honestly? The cuticle line is the first thing that gives a set away. Dry, shrunken skin makes a perfectly good set look weeks past its date, and ten seconds of oil fixes more of that than a fill does.

What should you do on removal day?

On removal day, get the set taken off properly and oil your nails straight afterwards, because the nail underneath is what you're left with.

Have it soaked or filed off by your tech, and please never peel or prise it, since that takes layers of your own nail with it. The full plan for the weeks after is in how to grow your nails back after acrylics, gel or SNS.

What if it's your own nail that's lifting?

A set lifting from your nail is one thing, and your own nail lifting from the skin underneath is another, and oil won't sort that out.

If it came on suddenly, hurts, is discoloured, thickened or lifting, see a GP, dermatologist or podiatrist.

And if it's just your set that needs some care, the pen is below.

Questions about nail oil and enhancements

Does cuticle oil ruin gel nails?

No. Oil on the cuticle and the skin around a gel manicure does not loosen it. Lifting usually comes from the natural nail flexing or from water getting in at the edge. Keep oil off the nail itself on appointment day, wait a day after a fresh set, and follow your tech's aftercare advice.

Can I put oil on acrylic nails?

Yes. Oil the cuticle, the skin at the sides and under the free edge, and wipe any oil off the surface. Daily oil keeps the cuticle from drying and shrinking back, which is what makes a set look grown out. The pen works over acrylic, gel, SNS and dip.

How soon after a gel manicure can I use cuticle oil?

Wait a day after a fresh set, then oil the cuticle and the skin around it once a day. That quiet day lets the new set settle. If your tech gave you different aftercare advice, follow theirs. Most people notice softer cuticles within days. Results vary.
